We are pleased to be supporting a research residency by Sarajevo-born British artist Ana Čvorović in Lebanon during May and June 2022.
Čvorović’s installations are an exploration of the psychodynamics of place, specifically in the context of war, migration, socio-economic impoverishment and processes of globalisation. Investigations into psychological and physical shifts as we move from place to place question notions of belonging, structure, identity and freedom. Čvorović will utilise the residency to research new work looking at oral histories of Lebanon. She aims to uncover multiple perspectives on the history of Mount Lebanon – a region that embodies a rich history of ethnic and religious diversity – counteracting a constructed narrative that has long led to conflict.
During her residency in Lebanon, she will undertake site visits, interviews and documentation, to generate research material that will form the foundations of a new body of multimedia work.
Ana Čvorović (b. Sarajevo 1981) came to the UK with her family in 1989, fleeing the impending civil war in Former Yugoslavia. A student at Brighton University and the Royal College of Art, Čvorović's installation-based work considers the role of borders and boundaries and the psychological effects of war and migration. Čvorović’s project, Borders Unfold, supported by Arts Council England, led to her first major UK solo exhibition at Pi Artworks, 2019. This was a culmination of a research residency in Utica, USA, exploring the Bosnian and refugee diaspora in the region. In 2021 Čvorović held her first solo exhibition outside of the UK, Archipelago, at Ballon Rouge Collective, Brussels. Previous exhibitions include, Pretty Ugly, Shame, Brussels (2022); Rules of Freedom, Collyer Bristow, London (2018); Strike Site, curated by Sacha Craddock, Pi Artworks, London (2017) and Backlit Gallery, Nottingham (2018); Refuse: Refuge: Re-fuse, The Koppel Project, London (2016); Res-Dual, curated by Kiki Mazzucchelli, Maddox Arts, London (2015); Unexpected, Ben Uri Museum (2016); as well as specially curated sections of Art15 (2014) and Ch.ACO art fair (2018), selected by Kathleen Soriano and Cecilia Fajardo-Hill. In 2018, Čvorović participated in the ‘Who Are We’ project in association with Counterpoints Arts at Tate Exchange. Čvorovic has been a recipient of numerous awards and grants including the Shelagh Cluett Award (2021), a-n Artist Travel Bursary Award (2018), Arts Council England Grant (2019) the Leathersellers Scholarship (2012) as well as being shortlisted for the Mark Tanner Sculpture Award (2017). Čvorović’s work is part of the Saatchi collection as well as numerous private collections.
